An essay on Education & Economy

Daniel Wahl [5] is a great author for several different reasons, one of them being: that he makes us put known ideas in different orders to realize the emergence of a new point of view. And that’s what I want to highlight here, the connection between education and the economy, one that I have never considered before (and might be relevant to some of you).

He explains that Oikos in Greek means house or household, and it is translated in English to ‘eco’. Here, we can think of several different words with this same radical: ecology, echography, ecophysiology, and ecosystem…. I would like to highlight the word “economy”, one that we normally associate with finance, money, the stock market, supply and demand, and so forth. By breaking this word down, we can achieve “eco” (of course!) and “nomy”, which in Greek also has a meaning, and this is related to “rule” or “law”. Bringing these words together again, we can think of the economy as the area responsible for the “rules of the house”.

Wait… what?! Is this right? What sense does it make? Economy and law?

That also blew my mind. Let me explain. But first, let me quote Daniel Wahl (because I couldn’t have done better)

Clearly the rules of how to husband the Earth’s resources
